Islamic Tiles
We viewed several examples of Islamic tile designs, discussing common color themes and shape motifs. All of the examples we viewed were radial designs and we talked about how one can create 1/4 of the design and simply turn the design around to create a radial design. Each student used basic geometry to create a symmetrical design within their tile that, when turned, would match up perfectly to create a radial design. The students started by sketching their ideas, planning out their coloring (which parts would be stay white or have color), and then scratched their design into a foam sheet to create a type of stamp to use to print their design next time! A great introduction to bas-relief!
