Surrealist Birds
We began this lesson by viewing a few paintings by Salvador Dali, including "The Elephants" and discussing surrealism. The students then watched Pixar's short film, "For the Birds" to help them identify the different parts of a bird and how different species of birds can look. Next, the students used watercolor to create a value change from dark to light using only one color. They then repeated this process with another color. Next, the students drew their surrealist birds in pencil and then traced their drawings with permanent marker...and don't forget to draw the ground so the birds have something to stand on! After that, they were ready to color in their birds using art sticks, focusing on making the birds colorful by using a variety of bright colors and coloring in the shapes fully.
